Miracle worker
Like everyone else, I associate Anne Bancroft, who died yesterday, with the role of Mrs. Robinson in
The Graduate. But the movie that made me a fan is one that didn’t even give her one of her four Oscar nominations. I saw
The Slender Thread many years ago, and I can still recall the heart-pounding tension that played against the heartbreaking dignity of Anne Bancroft’s character. Sidney Poitier was equally compelling as the suicide hotline volunteer trying to save her life. This movie was a real-time thriller, like
24 with fewer explosions and more humanity.
