The concept of
Hit Me Baby One More Time sounds cheesy, but boy does it work. It’s not really a competition, but a platform for artists who were popular in the eighties and early nineties and have receded from public consciousness. That’s about all The Knack and Haddaway have in common, except for a few things you don’t always see in today’s music: a lot of energy, simple but memorable lyrics, and a melody. It was fun to hear Tommy Tutone sing “867-5309” again and then come back with Blink 182’s “All the Small Things.” But let’s face it. Vanilla Ice is still Vanilla Ice. I loved the Motels’ Martha Davis’s spirited version of the Norah Jones song, “Don’t Know Why,” but there was nothing on tonight’s show that was quite as cool as last week, when Arrested Development sang a sublime version of “Heaven,” by Los Lonely Boys.
