Valentín
Sometimes the simplest idea, in the hands of the right director, can turn into the most beautiful movie. In the case of
Valentín, an Argentine film that takes an unsentimental look at the world through the eyes of a child, the right director (and writer) is Alejandro Agresti, who based the script on his own childhood. It’s about a boy who feels betrayed by the adults in his life, but instead of complaining he sets out to change them. And because of his sincerity and innocence, lacking in their own lives, they can’t help but respond to him. Many of my favorite films take the concept of family and expand or redefine it in some way. And that’s what I loved about
Valentín, that it shows how a visionary eight-year-old can take a tiny bit of hope and nourish it so that it grows and flourishes and brings people together. (The other thing I loved was the totally winning performance by young Rodrigo Noya in the title role.)
