All the time in the world
Here’s what I want in a movie: characters I can relate to and situations that make sense. I need it to be visually interesting and in some way entertaining. The last is the most important; it can’t be boring. I’ll settle for any three out of these four most of the time. Sometimes two are enough. Notice I didn’t say anything about a story. A story is nice, but it’s not a requirement.
The Jacket has all of these, plus something else. It has an idea. It’s a time-bending film like
The Butterfly Effect and an exploration of the nature of death like
Dragonfly. Without answering all the questions it poses, it tells the story of a man who knows more about his future than he does about his present, and who is forced to decide how to deal with knowledge he’s not supposed to have. In the end it gave me two more things I like in a movie: a chill down my spine and a tear in my eye.
