Game show gripes
Last summer I was entertained every night by the way Ken Jennings sorted through the material and rolled over his opponents on
Jeopardy. I wanted so much for him to keep winning that I would watch the end of the show first, just to make sure. This new guy who’s been winning game after game lately, a fellow named David Madden, is smart and quick on the signaling device, but he’s no Ken Jennings. It annoys me no end that he starts in the middle of the board instead of working from the top down. I hate that, but what I hate more is that he’s a wimp when it comes to the Daily Double and Final Jeopardy. He even risked five stinking dollars on one the other day, and tonight he had a huge lead but only bet $100 on Final.
He reminds me of that cocky Davis guy on
The Scholar, who got his comeuppance tonight. He’s always so sure that he knows more about the material than his opponents, but when you forget to listen carefully to the question, chances are you’re going to blow it! What two U.S. presidents were assassinated in the twentieth century? Well, it sure wasn’t Lincoln and Garfield. Poor Davis was so stunned. I think he still believes the question was about the nineteenth century. That’s it -- he gave the right answer; they just asked the wrong question!
