First of all, don’t you think Chief Justice
Rehnquist’s announcement that he’s not going to resign is a reaction to the rumors that he would be replaced by Sandra Day O’Connor? That’s what we’ve been hearing, that O’Connor would reconsider her retirement and accept a term as chief justice, giving the president a chance to nominate a more conservative associate justice. Now that he has only one seat to fill, he can marshal his forces behind whatever right wing ideologue he chooses.
Second of all,
of course the nominee should be a woman! It’s ridiculous to think that eight out of nine justices would be male, when women make up over half the population. Two women on the court would be the minimum, and only because there’s just one opening. There shouldn’t even be an argument about this.
