    Strange fruit
I believe PETA when they say that racist sentiments are not behind their campaign that compares animal abuse with human slavery and oppression of minorities. And I agree with them that inhumane treatment of animals is wrong and unfair to the other species we share the planet with.

But man! How culturally tone-deaf do you have to be to use photographs of black victims of lynching and equate them with slaughtered cows? I’m not saying PETA is comparing black people with animals, and I’m sure that’s not what they had in mind. But that’s how it comes across, and the shock value is overshadowed by the insensitivity.

The organization has never been known for its subtlety, but the implications of this campaign, intended or not, are at the very least going to keep their message from getting across. Even if they don’t believe it’s offensive, they should think about that point and abandon the exhibit, because it’s offensive to the rest of us.
