Lost
If Lost continues for very many more seasons (and as good as it is, I hope they will know when to quit), we’ll know more about its characters than we do about anybody in real life. But what we’ll learn will help us deal with real people, because we’ll be forced to admit that people, all people, are much more complex than we can ever comprehend. We learned a little more about Jack tonight, and the relationship between him and his father got fleshed out some. We also found out more about why his marriage broke up, and what drove him as a surgeon. But you know what? We still don’t know the whole story. I’m sure we’ll get more pieces to the puzzle as the season goes on, but even if Lost lasts for ten years, we can never know it all. Still, we’ll know more about the characters on the program than we can ever know about anyone in our real lives. What we can do is remember that more goes into the person next to us or the one across from us than we can see, and try to deal with them on that basis.
