The West Wing: Duck and Cover
Now that we have confirmation that this will be the last season of The West Wing, there’s a little less urgency about who will be elected president to succeed Jed Bartlet. But it’s still fun to watch. Politics is a great game, whether it’s played clean (as the two nominees on the program do) or dirty (as is apparently the case with almost every political operative both on the show and in real life). Would any candidate in a U.S. presidential election do what Matt Santos did, and lay off a story that could destroy his opponent, simply because he didn’t want to play politics with a national disaster? Would any do what Arnold Vinick did, and defend his closely held position in the face of a situation that makes it a serious political liability? We’d sure like to think so, wouldn’t we? But I can’t think of anyone on the current scene who would put principle above politics. I’d like to be proven wrong some time between now and November 2008.
