    Surface: Episode 13
Who knew that Surface was going to turn into an exploration of the perils of genetic engineering? Experimenting with the essence of life never seemed like such a bad idea as when thousands of creatures who owe their existence to scientists with no conscience were swimming toward the good citizens of Wilmington, eating their way through skin and bones and truck windshields.

They cloned an archaeopteryx in the 1960s? And kept it a secret for four decades? People with that kind of knowledge, skill and imagination should be pretty careful about which direction they wave their magic wands. They have assumed “a custodial attitude toward the biosphere.”

That’s a little like a politician who has assumed a custodial attitude toward information. Things could get out of control and they could end up destroying civilization.

With only two episodes left, I’m still wondering what the mysterious Davis Lee’s role is in the grand scheme. And what the grand scheme is, for that matter. How many unclassified marine vertebrates are there, for crying out loud? And will Miles lead the creatures out to sea and become one of them, as seems to be his destiny? (At least he finally kissed Caitlin without sticking to her.) Most importantly, when are the three main characters going to join forces? That’s what we’ve been waiting for all season.
