    Time Event
    7:52p
    State of the Union
By what measure is this man not the worst president in U.S. history? He’s taken every opportunity to lead the nation and the world and turned it into a chance to advance his political agenda. The lies he told tonight, about working together and maintaining a civil discourse, are the same lies he told when he was inaugurated six years ago. Since then, he has lied us into a war that serves the interests of his business associates. He has played on fear to restrict civil liberties and limit free speech. He has famously failed to respond adequately to the devastation of the Gulf Coast.

Tonight he again waved the banner of “freedom” to justify the occupation of Iraq. He again made promises to the world that he doesn’t intend to keep, as he has done since he took office. He has always talked about “compassion,” but he’s never shown any. Tonight he used it as a pretext to call for extension of the Patriot Act and expansion of his unregulated and unjustifiable eavesdropping on Americans.

Worst of all (and how it could get worse is a tribute to his moral bankruptcy), he again impugned the intelligence and the patriotism of his political enemies. He demeaned opponents of his self-serving adventurism. He talked about our soldiers in Iraq as if they are better off dying there than they would be safe at home with their families. And the so-called “opposition” stood there and applauded shamelessly.

At least they didn’t applaud the call for increased tax cuts for the rich while cutting programs that aid the poor. Oh to be in England, where he would have been hooted out of the house.

I pity anyone who fell for his lies and came away from the speech with hope that he will do the right thing. We should have learned by now. We’ve had six years of lies and failures and abuses of power to educate us, so there’s no excuse for being lured into the same trap again.
