Snails
The new and developing relationship between Luke and April holds a kind of mirror up to the central relationship on
Gilmore Girls, the one between Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai became a mother at eighteen and raised her daughter without much help for the next eighteen years. The two of them grew up together and became best friends, helping each other through the rough patches. Luke found out a year ago that he had a twelve-year-old daughter, and neither was sure they wanted to know the other one at all (nor was April’s mother). Now he’s helping raise her and making difficult decisions that he has no qualifications for, except that he’s her father.
Frankly, this parallel is the only reason I can see for developing this story line, unless it eventually brings Luke and Lorelai together somehow. Because I’m not buying that the marriage to Christopher, twenty years in the making, is going to survive. Everything about it seems a little too contrived, based on what we knew about him before they got back together after all that time. I think Rory’s first instinct, to cringe in horror, was the correct one, although she covered it pretty well for someone who can’t help expressing every thought and emotion she has.
