It’s kind of a relief to know that this whole “TV news doctor” riff on
ER was going somewhere after all. There have been sitcoms over the years that have successfully referenced the very medium they were shown on, from
The Dick Van Dyke Show to
30 Rock. But it doesn’t play so well in a dramatic series. That’s what’s wrong with
Studio 60, in fact. It’s just hard to take a story seriously when it’s on television and about television. So it’s nice to know that all of this business with Morris and Weaver competing for air time on the local news was actually leading somewhere. And now that Kerry is heading off to channel six in Miami, maybe we can get back to the kind of story line that made
ER great (and kept it great, in my opinion, all these years). It’s that combination of medical adventure and personal relationship drama that have kept me watching.
