Color commentary
It’s funny that television has such a hard time portraying politically conservative characters. Writers and directors and actors can make us believe we’re seeing real people of almost every type and description, from a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy to a psychic suburban soccer mom. So why do characters like Harriet Hayes on
Studio 60 and Kitty Walker on
Brothers & Sisters ring so false? I don’t think it’s the actors’ fault, because both Sarah Paulson and Calista Flockhart are amazing in their roles, even believable. They’re just not believable as right wing ideologues. All of their arguments seem to come from where liberals believe conservative thinking should come from, rather than from any deep, rational conviction. And when it comes down to core issues like gay marriage and, uh, gay marriage (which seems to be the only topic they want to talk about), they always come across as a little soft. I know Republicans. Some of my best friends are Republicans. I just don’t know any Republicans like Harry and Kitty, but maybe that’s my problem. It doesn’t make me enjoy their shows any less, that’s for sure.
By the way, I don’t watch
Boston Legal, but I did see a preview tonight, and is it just me or is James Spader looking more and more like William Shatner all the time?
