All sorts of neat stuff besides football
There have been some good shows featuring teenage characters, and there have been some that weren’t so good. Too much of the time the characters are one dimensional, and we get to see only a small part of a complex life. Everything is about friends and romantic entanglements, when we know that there is so much more to teenager’s lives. That’s what I love about Friday Night Lights. It’s a show where you see the romance, but you also see the different kinds of relationships the young characters have with their parents, and we all know from real life how big a part of their lives the family side is.

Tonight’s episode showed the whole panorama, from Matt’s conflicted feelings about his father staying home from the war to Tyra’s insider’s view of the dysfunction between her mother and stepfather. And, oh yes, there was romance, and just enough football to remind you what kind of juice the town of Dillon, Texas, runs on. But this isn’t a show about football, even if it’s set in a town that’s obsessed with its high school team. It’s about people in all their complexity, and that most human struggle to maintain your own identity while empathizing with those around you.
