Take some charcoal or something
Why is
Grey’s Anatomy the number one show? It’s not because of any intricacies in the storytelling or cleverly shaded narrative lines. In fact, most of what happens on the show is so obvious that you could probably outline it before you even see it. What makes it so appealing, though, is that it features characters who show you what’s inside them, and what it takes to bring out the qualities in them that you can relate to.
Bailey berates Izzie for getting emotionally involved with her patients, but she sees Izzie’s side when George’s father, who is Bailey’s patient, can’t be saved. And we get to see that Bailey can feel that same kind of attachment, which isn’t something you’d guess just by watching how she carries herself most of the time. In a similar vein, Karev has shed some of his natural detachment because of his relationship with Addison, which could only have developed if he hadn’t first found within himself a connection with her tiny patients.
It’s the complexity of the characters, and the way they grow, that make a show worth watching, and it’s the feelings they bring out in an audience that makes the experience resonate.
