Cheerleaders, clowns and folksingers
When one of the patients on
ER tonight started predicting the future as if he’d already lived through it, I thought he might be channeling Desmond from
Lost. But no, it was Andy Dick. To be honest, I’ve tolerated the
Grey-ing of
ER, because it still does trauma situations better than any other medical show. Despite the increased emphasis on the characters’ personal lives, and the occasional lapse into farce, it’s still a more serious drama than just about any other show on the air, and it can still hit the narrative heights often enough. Tonight’s episode portrayed a spectrum of ethical dilemmas, and each familiar character responded with the kind of complexity we’ve come to expect. So we forgive the over-the-top S&M relationship between Jane and Crenshaw, and even an appearance by Andy Dick (whose performance was actually rather appealingly understated).
