    Time Event
    10:48p
It’s too late to make it right
To me, the women in this year’s American Idol top ten are divided into two factions -- the five I think have a chance to win, and the five I wouldn’t mind seeing leave the competition in tomorrow night’s results show. Most of those in the latter group got lost in the songs they chose. Alaina rattled around inside the Dixie Chicks like a marble in a bathtub, while Gina was just a little too shrill for me. I liked Haley last week, when the judges didn’t; this week, when they liked her a little more, I liked her a little less. Antonella was almost good enough, but not quite. Leslie sang the same song that A.J. sang last night, and neither of them did it very well. I thought she should have been sent off last week instead of Nicole, but that’s just me.

As for the others, the ones I voted for, they were pretty much the same ones I liked last time around. LaKisha didn’t thrill me quite as much with “Midnight Train to Georgia” as she did with the Jennifer Hudson song, but it was still powerful. Jordin and Sabrina both have big voices, and they both know how to use them, and I will always look forward to hearing whatever they sing. Stephanie is an incredible performer with such grace and elegance that she comes across as more professional than any of the other women. But it was Melinda singing “My Funny Valentine” that totally blew me away tonight. It’s a great song, and she did a unique and compelling version that actually had me holding my breath, it was so good.

I still think this year’s winner will be one of the women, although the playing field is a bit more level after this week’s round.
