God bless the endless love child
It doesn’t really matter much who is eliminated on
American Idol this week, unless it’s someone with a chance to win. Someone good is probably going to go home soon, because it’s obvious the weaker singers among the twelve finalists have a lot more popular support than they really should. Any of the six guys could go and it would have no effect on who makes it to the final two later this season. None of them sang as well as they did in their first audition, and most of them were just plain boring on the big stage. Two or three of the girls are in the same category.
Who knows what prompts people to keep voting for someone who isn’t the best? It’s might be a singing competition, as Simon keeps insisting, but that’s not the only factor. Still, how can it not be obvious that Sanjaya and Haley don’t belong in the finals? My votes tonight went, pretty much equally, to Melinda, LaKisha and Jordin. They were so far above the rest of the singers that I wasn’t even tempted to throw votes to contestants I’ve supported in the past, such as Brandon and Stephanie.
It’s like seeding the teams for March Madness; you’d love to have the top seeds end up in the finals, but there’s always an upset or two along the way. And we groan whenever someone like Mandisa has to sing a Shania Twain song and is voted off before Bucky and Ace. You only have to remember season three, when Jennifer Hudson left before John Stevens (and LaToya London before Jasmine Trias), to know that surprises and upsets are part of the competition.
