    Time Event
    10:30p
Playing the bongos in his boxer shorts
Thanks, America. This is the top ten we’re stuck with on American Idol, but there are better performers at 11 and 12 than about half of the ones that are left. And I have no doubt that the worst singers tonight will still be with us next week. I hope that Chris Sligh will still be around, even though he was horrible tonight. As he was singing, I was thinking, “What a mess,” and then afterward Simon used the same word. Still, I know he can sing better than Sanjaya and Haley, and hopefully one of them will leave tomorrow night. (But no, that won’t happen.)

My favorite, tonight and every night, is Melinda. She is incapable of giving a bad performance. Everything she does is so polished, and her vocals are always perfect and interesting (a tough combination, I think). Even though I think she’s safe, I vote for her every week, before anyone else. Tonight I also voted for two other contestants. Gina was so good that she gave me chills, and I like her because she’s different from everyone else on the show. And I also gave Phil some votes, partly because I thought his version of “Every Breath You Take” was excellent, and partly because the judges seem to be handing the victory to someone else all the time. He was better than Blake tonight, and better than Chris Richardson, no matter what Randy, Paula and Simon say.

This wasn’t my favorite performance by Jordin, but I still love her. I think it was the song that turned me off, because it had no melody (like about ninety percent of today’s pop music). But I really enjoy seeing her stand next to Ryan Seacrest, because she makes him look as if he’s from a different species altogether. LaKisha was great, as always (I know because I rewound and watched her again), but she went first and that can be the kiss of death. I’d like to think she’s safe, but no one’s ever really safe. Probably Gina and Phil should worry, because last week I voted for Stephanie, and look where she is now. (Where, by the way?)
