Tell him I want my sword back
My least favorite character on Heroes, Candice, keeps gumming up the works for me. I’m no comic fanboy, so I suppose I don’t have the right to an opinion, but the conceit that someone can morph into another character and completely fool others just rubs me the wrong way. I hated that she tricked Micah into thinking she was his mom, but I did like that Mr. Bennet realized she wasn’t Claire. Of all the powers of all the characters, this is the one that almost spoils things for me. I even prefer Sylar’s mindbending.

With all the shifting back and forth between now and the future, it’s hard to write off any character that appears to have been killed. I had no doubt tonight that somehow Peter would be saved, because he has too important a role to play in the grand scheme. And even after Sylar worked Isaac over, there seemed to be hope that Hiro could find a way to save him. Or retrieve him. Or whatever.

And speaking of Hiro, I was frustrated that he didn’t appear in this show until near the end of the episode, but I’ll give some points back for the fact that we got to see him face himself, five years into the future and more evolved into whatever it is he either is or is not supposed to become. That’s the thing about this show that I do love. There’s no reality that can’t be balanced by an alternate reality. We’ve seen it from the start with Niki and Jessica, but we also see it with Nathan and Peter, and with Mohinder and Sylar.

The idea that a previous generation of heroes, as explained by Linderman, gave in to the seductive side of their powers and were unable to fulfill their mission, is central to the appeal of the show, I think. It started with Mr. Bennet, who began as the ultimate villain and became a force against evil. We’ve seen how the powers can be misused, sometimes with the best intention and sometimes not. We will never know until the end (and maybe not even then) how to tell the good guys from the bad guys, because there’s a little of both in everyone, whether they have super powers or not.
