Remember how the stars stole the night
When I heard that two million votes were cast after the last episode of
The Next Great American Band, I almost decided not to vote at all tonight. Here I’d been all season thinking I was the only one watching and voting, except for the twelve-year-old Light of Doom fans and the bands’ families. But I couldn’t help myself. I threw all my votes tonight to the Clark Brothers, as I’ve been doing for the last few weeks. DMHO and Sixwire are good bands, with good front men and good musicianship. They’re a lot of fun to watch on stage.
But no band in the competition, going back to the beginning, sings and plays with the honest, open emotion of the Clark Brothers. It’s a spiritual experience every time they perform. They have such a unique sound, and every song they do becomes their own. For that alone, I hope they win. I also hope the fact that the judges seem to agree with me doesn’t cause the public to vote for somebody else in reaction.
I actually won’t be surprised no matter who wins next week, because I don’t have a feel for which band is getting the most support from viewers. That’s why I had to vote after all, whether my few calls make any difference or not.
