Another ghastly wedding song
Unlike last night with the boys, none of the top ten girls on tonight’s
American Idol stood out so much from the crowd that they became a front-runner. Overall, I’d have to say the quality of the performances was a cut above the guys, and there was no one tonight that I thought was an obvious choice to go home this week. By the same token, whoever does get voted off will be forgotten by next week, no matter who it is.
It seems to me I misjudged Amanda Overmyer, the rock and roll nurse, coming into the competition. I thought she would be one of the best, but after the second straight unremarkable, slightly strained performance, I’m not so sure any more. The funny thing is that she’s a rock singer without the rock and roll “attitude” that’s so important to the guys, and I think that’s one thing that attracted me to her in the auditions. She’s so down to earth and unimpressed with herself that I want her to be better than she seems to be.
Here’s my problem with voting tonight. I probably wouldn’t bother to pick up the phone, except that one of my favorites was kind of trashed by the judges, and I don’t want that to keep her from coming back next week. I didn’t thing Ramiele Malubay’s version of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was nearly as bad as they said, although I do agree that there are better songs to showcase her talent. But I find her such an engaging performer that I did pick up the phone a few times for her. I also threw a few votes to Syesha Mercado, for the same reasons.
I agreed with the judges that Brooke White’s performance of “You’re So Vain” was the best vocal of the night (if that’s what the judges said; sometimes it’s hard to tell), but the others weren’t very far behind. It will be sad to see any two of these girls leave tomorrow night, but the other eight will come back strong next week, whoever they turn out to be.
