See you on the promenade
Some of the dancers who were cut during Vegas Week on
So You Think You Can Dance hadn’t slept for two or three days, so if they said some things they shouldn’t have, I’ll give them a pass. It was such an emotional period that even some of those who made it to the top twenty showed rough edges. It’s good they didn’t cut too many dancers during the group choreography stage, because they could have lost some strong competitors for the wrong reasons. They didn’t really show us enough of the group dances to let us see what they were seeing.
A few of the contestants had the right attitude, and most said they would try again. As Erika Gee, cut for the third time in Vegas, said, “If you don’t have a thick skin, you probably shouldn’t be a dancer.” Twins Anthony and Antwain Hart were never as good separately as they were together, and it was interesting to see that Anthony, who had a weaker individual audition Charleston, made it a little further than his brother this time, although neither is in the top twenty.
Some of the dancers who were strongest in their initial auditions didn’t quite make the cut. Brandon Bryant, who was brilliant in his contemporary routine in Washington, D.C., was the last male contestant cut. Kelli Baker, who was in
High School Musical and is the daughter of a choreographer, made it all the way to the final stage, where all dancers were encouraged to keep trying. But in her case, not on the show this year.
Several of those who did make the top twenty were never featured prominently in the audition tour, so we’ll have to wait and see how good they are. The most impressive of those we do already know might be Thayne Jasperson, whom Mia and Mary both loved in Salt Lake City, and Courtney Galiano, who absolutely lit up the Charleston audition. It will be fun to see how they, along with the rest, progress as the audience voting starts next week.
