    So much more than dancing
Whatever got into the judges tonight, it made So You Think You Can Dance a little less fun to watch. Not that I don’t think they should give the dancers their honest opinions, and tell them what they’ve done wrong, but I thoroughly enjoyed performances that were trashed by Nigel, so it took a little of the edge off for me. For the first time tonight I enjoyed Kourtni and Matt, when they did their soft hip hop routine that Nigel said seemed like “hip hop on sleeping pills.” Mary also claimed not to be entertained by this number, but I was.

With all that being said, I think the judges’ two favorite couples are also mine. Katee and Joshua are always at the top of their game, and Kherington and Twitch never fail to be entertaining and watchable. My votes tonight went to Chelsie and Mark, for three reasons. Most importantly, I loved their two routines, the hard-hitting Mandy Moore jazz number and the fox trot with the flying feathers. Second, they are actors who portray interesting characters and know how to tell a story. But also, I think there’s a chance these two might be overlooked among the flashier pairs on the show.

My favorite routine of the night was Mia Michaels’ bedroom drama with Kherington and Twitch. Everything about it, from the choreography to the props to the performances, was absolutely riveting. (And weren’t the two of them also on fire when they did their paso doble!) My second favorite was Mia’s contemporary routine for Katee and Joshua that starts with them walking slowly forward, side by side, but then includes so many delicate yet powerful moves that require them to work as one, totally connected. (Hmmm. Maybe that one was my favorite. Plus, their West Coast swing, choreographed by Benji Schwimmer, looked even better the second time I watched it.)

And because I’m such a sucker for a romantic story with a happy ending, my third favorite is the Mandy Moore lyrical jazz routine by Jessica and Will that used the shirt to such great effect.

It gets tougher every week to pick a bottom three, because a lot of the really weak links have already been weeded out. I didn’t believe the so-called chemistry between the new couple, Comfort and Thayne; their Broadway routine was a mess and their smooth waltz was boring. Despite what I said above about Kourtni and Matt, I don’t usually enjoy watching them dance because I can’t get past the toothy smile that’s always plastered on Matt’s face. I guess I just have a bottom two this week, because I can’t think of anyone else, unless you let me include that awful dress that Cat Deeley was wearing tonight.
