The freakout factor is unbelievable
I was ridiculously happy to see Nicolas and Donald make it to the mat ahead of Nate and Jen on tonight’s episode of The Amazing Race 12. Now Nate and Jen can work on their “relationship,” and I can watch the final leg of the race with three teams that I like. I have to admit that they were amusing while they lasted. Jen got so put out that another team wasn’t having the bad luck she wished on them that I think she got physically ill from the strain. In fact, she said exactly that when TK and Rachel made up the three hour deficit: “I can’t believe they’re here. It’s making me sick.”
She said things like that not just tonight, but all the way through the race. And then at the end tonight, just after berating Nate for not making decisions (“You’re the man!”) and telling him, “Thanks a lot for ruining my fricken birthday,” she pronounced, “We need to stay positive right now.” As I said, entertaining. But I’m glad they’re gone.
Still, I can see how irritating it must have been to have TK and Rachel keep turning up after the other teams thought they had squashed them like a couple of termites. They were lucky, yes, and they were mellow, for the most part. But they made their way through all the tasks, including the Speed Bump that nobody else had to do, without putting stress on themselves or their relationship. Those three hours were washed away by the fact that the building where the first clue would be found didn’t open until 10:00 am, the time they left the previous Pit Stop. But other than that, they made their own luck, and they deserve to be in the final three.
As for the other two remaining teams, it’s fun to see someone a little bit older get as far as Donald and Ronald have made it, with their grandson and daughter, respectively. Both Nicolas and Christina have shown patience that has kept their teams together, and both have shown the kind of leadership it takes to keep a team in the race. Don sort of let Nic lead their team, but Chris had to wrestle the reins away from her dad. She’s one of my favorite racers in all twelve seasons because of the way she handled him, but as I said, any of the three teams would be worthy winners.
